1. Marking Out
-A scriber to mark lines on METAL
-A sharp pencil to mark lines on WOOD
-A spirit-based felt pen on BARE PLASTICS

~Engineer's square and scriber are used to mark lines at right angle to the datum edge on metals
~Try square and pencil are used to mark lines at right angles to a face side or face edge on wood
~Marking knife with try square are used to cut a line across the grain of a piece of wood where the section of wood needed to be removed

A pair of ODD-LEG or JENNY CALIPERS is used to mark lines parallel to the datum edge on metal and plastic
A MARKING GAUGE is used to mark lines parallel to a face side or face edge on wood
2. Holding
Metal and small plastics workpieces are normally held in an [engineer's vice]. Wooden workpieces are normally held in a [bench vice]. Wood may also be held in a [tail vice] and [bench stops] for some cutting procedures
3. Shaping
- Cutting curves
A [coping saw] is used to cut curves in wood or plastic.
A [scroll saw] may be used to cut curves in thin pieces of wood or plastic.
An [abrafile] is used to cut curves in thin pieces of wood, metal and plastic.
