Souce A
A view by historian Earnest Chew :
Undoubtedly, it was Raffles who took the main initiative in search for a British base, who secured Governor- General Lord Hasting's authorization, and who favoured. However, it was left to Farquhar and Crawfurd to work out the administrative and financial details, and economic incentives, which attrected increasing number to Singapore. In this case, it was a joint enterprise and endeavour of many people, which contributed to the founding and growth of Singapore.

Souce B
A view by historian Constance Mary Turnbull :
Crawfurd's name, like Farquhar's has faded almost into obscurity, and of Singapore's pioneers, only Raffles' fame and reputation have grown over the years. In some ways, history has been unfair to Farquhar and Crawfurd, who gave early Singapore the efficient administration which Raffles could not supply. The actual inplementation of Raffles' policy fell to Crawfurd. Raffles drew broad sweeping outlines, and it was left to practical and realistic men like Farquhar and Crawfurd to fill in the details.

A) Study Source A
What can you infer from Source A about Raffles' contribution to the founding of Singapore?
B) Study Source A and Source B.
How similar are Soure A and Source B on their views about the founding of Singapore?
Answers :
A) I can infer from Source A that Raffles' contribution to the founding of Singapore was significant as it says that " it was Raffles who took the main initiative in search for a British base."
I can also infer that Raffles' contribution to the founding of Singapore was limited as it says that " it was a joint enterprise and endeavour of many people, which contributed to the founding and growth of Singapore " . This means that there were others like Farquhar abd Crawfurd who were equally important as Raffles.
Question Stem must be stated in the answers.
B) Source A and B are similar in showing the importance of Farquhar and Crawfurd in the founding of Singapore. Source A says that " it was left to Farquhar and Crawfurd to work out the administrative and financial details, which attrscted increasing numbers to Singapore " and Source B says that "practical and realistic men like Farquhar and Crawfurd filled in the details of the actual implementation. "
However, Sources A and B differ in showing the role of Raffles in the founding of Singapore. Source A says that "Raffles took the main initiative in search for a British base" and gave credit to him for contributing to the "Growth of Singapore". However, Source B says that "Raffles brew broad sweeping outlines" and left the rest of the work to Farquhar and Crawfurd.
